Success in Business, Redefining the Meaning of Success
Success in Business, Redefining the Meaning of Success
Can you say Google? Ranked number one of the best companies to work for by Fortune magazine Google has managed to create a new standard. Now, this is not going to be an article about Google but I want you to take a look at some of the things that Google has done to achieve that ranking. Looking at those things will serve as a gauge for what the new definition of success should be and what all companies should be striving to achieve.
“What makes it so great? Our new No. 1 sets the standard for Silicon Valley: free meals, swimming spa, and free doctors onsite. Engineers can spend 20% of time on independent projects. No wonder Google gets 1,300 resumés a day.” (Time Warner, 2010)
Would you consider this a holistically successful company? I would and this is why, they have made a major investment on their best commodity; their people! Investing in their people has enabled them to retain their standing within the market and as one of the top companies to work for in America. Corporate America is being called to a higher level of integrity and an understanding where their bottom dollar really lies. For too long now, employers have put only their customers as the key component to their success regardless of the cost to their employees and their families. In the long term, this has negatively impacted their bottom line which is why we are currently in the condition we’re in with so many unemployed and many companies closing their doors.
It is time for corporations to rise to the challenge of defining a new meaning of success. Google has done this because it honors the reality that companies are comprised of human beings and, that as such we need to be cared for just as well as the customers we serve. Success should be gauged by not only the dollar bills rolling in the door through the company’s savvy sales and marketing teams but by how all the employees of that company are treated in addition to the sales milestones reached.
Success Business
One thing I have always said and that still holds true today. A company cannot exist in the world without its employees. It is the people who work in corporate America that makes business great or not. So, how are you preparing your company to be successful in this economy? Are you treating your employees like your key asset? Or, are you still driving your bottom line from the mindset of ensuring that the customer’s needs are met but not those of your employees? Aren’t your employees truly your first customer?
It is unfortunate that so many companies are laying off employees and that people are finding that they have to reinvent themselves by becoming entrepreneurs. I hope that as they embark on becoming the next major corporations they consider the new approach that businesses should be taking to ensure their livelihood and longevity; that their people are their backbone and should therefore be their most treasured commodity. Be a company that honors the humanity in all. That they should invest in employees by providing them with the same considerations that they would themselves or their customers. That companies should meet them where they’re at in regard to access to services, amenities and so much more. Perhaps then you too might have achieved the new definition of success. A company that not only takes care of their customers but also takes care of their employees to the point where you have got resume submissions coming faster than you can handle.
